In 1953 my husband & I, with our 2-year-old daughter, lived on the "Rose Montgomery place" about 4 miles from Bona. I believe the house we lived in was later moved across the road from where it was when we lived there, and the old homestead is now part of the property around the Stockton lake. Your photos and story brought back a lot of memories. We sometimes shopped at the store in Bona, and at other times drove the mile and a half to Cane Hill, where we could get a big double-dip chocolate ice cream cone for a nickel. Thanks for the memories.
We used to go the Humbert Store to get gas, food, and other misc items when were visiting the area. My wife Debe and I ate at the counter sometime during the mid 1970's They made burgers and they would slice off cheese and cold cut meats for the asking and wrap them in white paper. I believe there were 3 generations of Humberts in the store for a while there. Our place was in Aldrich and we used to come over to Bona up the long steep hill that was only a small gravel road in the early days. I remember how steep and rough it was! I always thought Bona was a nice little spot but I never paid a whold lot of attention to it. Our world was around Aldrich! ! Little did I know that we would end up owing the two story white house right across the highway west of the Humbert store! We purchased it from the Freeze family in 2010 The original part of the house was built in 1882 That was 12 years before my great grand father bought the Box 40 over Aldrich way! ! He probably knew of the house and of its owners then. Alot of water has gone under the bridge since then. Doug Box
